You must be willing to accept more uncertainty as you continually recalibrate your organization’s vision for the future. A company’s vision cannot include every detail, because there are still many unknowns. Leaders can articulate a strong vision for 10 to 15 years in the future while being open to iterating on the strategy and tactics categories as they encounter new tech trends, global events, social changes, and economic shifts.

Consider The Possibilities

Strategy execution is distinct from strategy, harder to pull off than defining a strategy, and therefore more critical to success—underpinned by seemingly indisputable virtues such as diligence, discipline, consistency, alignment, and focus. But such a simplistic view of execution can be misleading and can reduce actual impact.
Suppliers wield significant power if the item they provide is scarce or unique, or if there are only a few suppliers. They have considerable power to damage a competitive position. One response is to build close relations with important suppliers to secure delivery and control prices. In the long term, the solution may be to move into the supplier’s industry to safeguard supplies.
Agility is not a strategy. It is a capability, a very valuable one that has immediate operational benefits but that cannot permanently affect a firm’s competitive position unless there is a strategist making the right decisions about where to direct that capability. And the seeming absence of a plan doesn’t mean that successful startups don’t have strategies.
One of the most exciting areas of business thought today revolves around business model innovation. Many companies are still trying to survive and thrive using a business model that may have been appropriate a few years ago but that no longer works. What is your business model today, and is it the appropriate model for your business in the current environment?

Managing costs carefully moves you to a new level of financial discipline, redirecting your resources from the projects that distract you to the core capabilities that drive your profits. The first natural advantage of good strategy arises because other organizations often don’t have one. And because they don’t expect you to have one, either. A good strategy has coherence, coordinating actions, policies, and resources so as to accomplish an important end. Many organizations, most of the time, don’t have this. Instead, they have multiple goals and initiatives that symbolize progress, but no coherent approach to accomplishing that progress other than “spend more and try harder.”

Strategy allows organisations to develop a clearer understanding of their own organisation and what’s required for them to succeed. It helps organisations understand their core capabilities, identify and address weaknesses and mitigate risks. It can help organisations better design themselves so that they are focusing on the right things that are the most likely to deliver the best performance, productivity and profit both now and in the future.

This might mean that risk-management procedures and techniques are well documented, clearly communicated and regularly reviewed and monitored. Understanding whether it is the means or the ends that matter, can help to clarify the best choice or decision.
The simple discipline of defining a capability gives you a much clearer view of what you are trying to build, and why it matters. For solution selling, the stated definition was: “To build long-term strategic relationships.” They would communicate directly with the automakers’ technical specialists, instead of just the purchasing staff, and build their own financial models of the products, so they understood the costs and potential revenues, before signing the contract.
What consistently separates winners from losers is their approach to strategy. Companies caught in the saturated industries follow a conventional approach, racing to beat the competition by building a defensible position within the existing industry order.

Strategic Areas For Consideration

For global operations, your structure must be able to support your worldwide products, but at the same time you have to take into account different geographical preferences. In this case, a matrix organization is a good structure: You can focus horizontally on your products and focus vertically on the different geographic markets.
Are your culture and strategy aligned? Do the values and beliefs in your company support the decisions you’ve made about products, markets, and financial goals? Look at your performance goals. Are you rewarding people in a way that will encourage them to achieve the strategic goals you’ve set?
Have you clarified responsibility and accountability? If people don’t know what they’re responsible for, don’t expect them to do their jobs. Coordination and cooperation are not possible without responsibility and accountability.
Individual companies in an industry often target different customer segments — for example, large versus small customers. But an industry typically converges on a single buyer group. The pharmaceutical industry, for example, focuses overridingly on influencers: doctors. The office equipment industry focuses heavily on purchasers: corporate purchasing departments.

Understanding what is taking place within the external environment enables us to find opportunities for growth and sustained profitability and it can help us identify and respond to changes that could make us extinct. In the same way that the motor vehicle put many horsewhip makers out of business, it’s important that you understand what can affect you and your business both short term and long term.
History shows that industries are constantly being created and expanded over time and that industry conditions and boundaries are not given; individual actors can shape them. Companies need not compete head-on in a given industry space.

Resilient business strategies are more urgent than ever today and are the key to achieving value for all stakeholders in the long term. They will lead to nimbler and more innovative companies.

Clearly diagnose the risks and challenges anticipated in pursuing this opportunity and come up with the mitigation plan to address them.
