That an execution plan be “practical”—simple, concrete, familiar, and unchanging—seems incontrovertible. Execution is praxis, after all. But when dealing with new or changing situations, familiar, plausible actions can easily fail to achieve the desired effect.
Spend two to three times as many person-hours modeling revenue as modeling costs. Anybody can model costs. It takes real effort and skill to model revenue, because it’s controlled by customers, not the company. Revenue modeling necessitates a deep understanding of customer needs.
Disruptive growth is responding to dramatic change with new business models and new capabilities. You must be sure that you have a genuine right to win in this new venture, and that the circumstances warrant the significant investment involved. True disruption — the kind that merits disruptive growth — is rarer than many business people think.

How well does your organization support the achievement of your business strategy? If your company seeks to beat competitors through superior customer service, is this reflected in the day-to-day behavior of staff and their interactions with customers? If innovation is a key strategic priority, does your organizational structure enable creative collaboration, risk-taking, and knowledge sharing?
Every business needs a safety net of protocol to help them make those tough decisions. What a documented strategy can do is give your business the extra support and guidance it needs if put to test.
A valuable approach when entering new markets is to challenge existing practices, so as to provide a better service and serve customers in a way that delivers (and ideally exceeds) their expectations. This requires skills of creativity and innovation, a talent for spotting opportunities and the ability to re-evaluate the way the business operates.
Providing sufficient resources to avoid, mitigate or control risks is important, as is clear organisational communication. Focusing on the quality of what people do is crucial too. Designing and maintaining management information systems to produce the right information in the right form at the right time to the right people should make it easier to control risks, particularly at times of change. Following a process for managing risk involves assessing potential catalysts, avoiding or dulling them and taking action.

Creating Your Vision

What percentage of your decisions in business do you think will turn out to be wrong in the fullness of time? According to an American Management Association study and interviews with thousands of managers, fully 70 percent of business decisions turn out to be wrong over time. They may be a little bit wrong, a lot wrong, or completely disastrous.
Experience shows that risk must be actively managed and accorded a high priority, not only within the decision-making process but permanently and throughout the organisation. Build some tolerance for variance into your numbers. Your budget stops being accurate the moment you finish it, and when variances occur—and they will—make sure the numbers allow opportunity for your managers to act creatively. Although budgets should be designed to create accountability, accountability should be related to the real issues behind the numbers, not the numbers alone.

Moving To Action

You will not want to attack both new products and new markets at the same time. Let your driving force set your new priorities while maintaining your successful areas. The product or service driving force means you have successful products or services. Growth will come by selling those products in new markets. The market needs driving force requires you to focus on your markets and perhaps find new products or services.
Update the company dashboard around the key metrics that support the company’s long-term goals, and ensure those KPIs are aligned with the company’s purpose. Visually represent sales numbers as the result of strategic execution, not the goal.
Strategy, implementation, and execution are three coincident determinants of a company or business unit’s ultimate output — its results — that are very difficult to parse into their individual effects.
Vision is an abstract word that means different things to different people. Classically, a vision or vision statement is a snapshot into the future. It should include aspirations of what type of company you want to be, and, unlike a mission statement, articulates what success looks like in clear terms (customers, markets, volume, etc.).

This means trying brand new, bold strategies. Determine who’s still buying what you’re selling; maybe they are in a new industry, or the product they’re buying is just a little different from what you’re offering.

Leaders need information to understand the complexities of their environment and to ensure effective action. Yet the amount of information available these days is overwhelming, with the potential for paralysis by analysis.
