Decisions often involve compromise, and as long as the essential goals will still be achieved there is nothing wrong with this. Sometimes the ideal solution is unattainable, but it is better to have 50% of something than 100% of nothing.
At the heart of the blue ocean strategy is “value innovation,” which is described as the “simultaneous pursuit of differentiation and low cost.” Differentiation is what customers want; value, in the customer’s eyes, is the “utility” of the product minus its price. Low cost is what companies want; value for companies is the price minus the cost to make the product.
Consider The Predictability And Malleability Of Your Industry
A business strategy is a set of competitive moves and actions that a business uses to attract customers, compete successfully, strengthening performance, and achieve organisational goals. It outlines how business should be carried out to reach the desired ends.
Decision-making is far from a cold, analytic process.Instead, our emotions and feelings play a crucial role by helping us filter various possibilities quickly, even though our conscious mind might not be aware of the screening. Our intuitive feelings thus guide our decision-making to the point at which our conscious mind is able to make good choices.
The first step toward effective strategy is diagnosing the specific structure of the challenge rather than simply naming performance goals. The second step is choosing an overall guiding policy for dealing with the situation that builds on or creates some type of leverage or advantage. The third step is the design of a configuration of actions and resource allocations that implement the chosen guiding policy.
Value innovation is created in the region where a company’s actions favorably affect both its cost structure and its value proposition to buyers. Cost savings are made by eliminating and reducing the factors an industry competes on.
Determine Your Corporate Mission
Innovations can arise from experience, creative genius or by collaboratively adapting the work and ideas of others. Learn from others by considering how everything from market research to developing customer loyalty has been addressed in other markets or industries. An understanding of current and future sources of competition will also guide development decisions.
Many marketing experts believe that all marketing today is segmentation. This is the development of absolute clarity about those specific customers who most appreciate the qualities of your product or service in your area of specialization.
Marketing well may take more planning than any other area of your business, and most businesses have a specifically developed marketing plan. Marketing plans include not only an assessment of the world at large, but also activities you will undertake to impact that world and reach your customers. Your customers’ perception is critical; your message to them about your product must be clear, have impact, and allow them to immediately see the benefit in buying your product.
There is no such thing as a riskless strategy. Strategy will always involve both opportunity and risk, be it a competition-based or a blue ocean initiative. But at present the playing field is dramatically unbalanced in favor of tools and analytical frameworks to succeed in competition-baseds.

Some technological changes are happening so rapidly that most companies have not yet taken advantage of the opportunities they provide. Every company still has a great deal to learn through prototyping and experimentation. But when translating the strategic into the everyday, be careful not to experiment for its own sake. The most successful companies link their technologically driven interventions closely with their strategy.
In many situations, the main impediment to action is the forlorn hope that certain painful choices or actions can be avoided — that the whole long list of hoped-for “priorities” can all be achieved. It is the hard craft of strategy to decide which priority shall take precedence. Only then can action be taken. And, interestingly, there is no greater tool for sharpening strategic ideas than the necessity to act.
Sales and marketing have become increasingly important functions in business as product differentiation has become less clear, and prices have become more transparent, market conditions more volatile and customers more fickle and assertive. All this has made decision-making more complex.

This means that you employ only those people whom your competitors would want to hire if they could. It should be a goal of your human resource planning to seek state-of-theart employees. Employees should know that you expect excellence from them and that they probably will need to invest in themselves through outside training to keep their end of this bargain.

Distinctive capabilities are expensive. They involve significant fixed costs and enormous managerial attention. To unlock the potential value from your investment in them, you must focus on only a few, and instill them throughout your enterprise, everywhere you do business.
In the last decade, there has been a fundamental shift in the cost and ease of becoming a global player from virtually any corner of the globe. This is a trend no organization can afford to downplay. With the ease and low cost of setting up a website, any business can have a global storefront.
It looks as if Amazon and the platform giants like Google and Facebook keep changing strategy because they use the massive amounts of cash they generate to innovate, bringing out new products and services every year. Innovation is easily confused with a change in strategic direction, and sometimes it does indeed trigger such a change.
Growth through capability development is an evolutionary extension of your capabilities system, building one capability from another. This is sometimes known as “capabilities chaining,” because each new form of proficiency, while fitting into your capabilities system, enables you to establish a chain of new businesses that in turn spur the development of other capabilities.
Overcome Key Organizational Hurdles
More than likely, you have different business units, business divisions, or even subsidiaries in your company. A corporate strategy can get tripped up if there is poor integration among the different parts of your structure.
Relying on what has worked in the past is no guarantee of success in the future. It is therefore important for an organisation to develop an innovative and creative culture that will help it adapt successfully to change.
It takes courage to fire the salesperson responsible for the company’s biggest, most lucrative account when that same salesperson drives a company car drunk and causes an accident. There will be many times when CEOs will want to smooth over something that requires decisive action because of the potential consequences or because they just can’t take on one more challenge at the moment. However, CEOs who exercise poor moral judgment will lose their personal integrity with all of their employees watching.
A lack of objectivity may result from prejudice or being unduly influenced by the halo effect, where past successes blind people to current risks and flaws. It may be connected with false expectations or assumptions about behaviour or circumstances. Or it may be a result of complacency, arrogance, laziness, tiredness or overwork. It can lead to an overestimation of the barriers to entry to your market.
Identify The Capabilities You Need To Ensure Success
I have never seen anybody become good at strategy without practice. It may happen, but I have never seen it. I doubt that I will see it, because strategy is a discipline. Like any discipline, you have to believe in it and work at it to become skilled; both mindset and effort are required to make progress and become adept at strategy.
The greatest challenge with global strategy is knowing how much standardization to pursue. Even top global brands still invest in some level of localization and adaptation to local markets — just not so much that it infringes on their scale and efficiency. You should expect to invest in a solid localization process so that your customers can interact with your website, mobile app, packaging, and more in their home language.
True agility doesn’t come from pursuing growth wherever it may be located or somehow spotting trends and getting to those markets first. It comes from pursuing opportunities where your capabilities give you what we call the right to win — the ability to compete more effectively than your competitors could in the arenas where you choose to do business.
Build some tolerance for variance into your numbers. Your budget stops being accurate the moment you finish it, and when variances occur—and they will—make sure the numbers allow opportunity for your managers to act creatively. Although budgets should be designed to create accountability, accountability should be related to the real issues behind the numbers, not the numbers alone.
Sharing Financial Information With Employees
Your time frame is going to depend on forces inside and outside the organization. New regulations or changes in your industry are going to push you to achieve your strategies within a certain time frame.
In a business, the functional and operating strategies feed into the business strategy. These two frameworks are responsible for effectively and efficiently delivering on the organisation’s objectives as outlined in the corporate, competitive, and business strategies.
If you do not properly understand a problem, you are unlikely to find the best solution to it, especially when circumstances are complex or fast-moving. There may be no satisfactory answer, only a choice between competing alternatives that are far from ideal.
A strategic plan provides an opportunity to change an organisation’s nature: its purpose, its activities and even its organisational culture, including values and the ways things are done. It can embrace a set of guiding principles as well as a practical framework for achieving its aims. It also offers a means by which performance can be measured and assessed.
Face The Brutal Facts
To set a company on a strong, profitable growth trajectory in the face of strong industry conditions, it won’t work to benchmark competitors and try to outcompete them by offering a little more for a little less. Such a strategy may nudge sales up but will hardly drive a company to open up uncontested market space.
Establishing a mission statement is like getting the right combination to a lock. Once you have the right combination and you turn to the right numbers in the right sequence, the lock will open. The actual strategy will begin to formulate itself as the step-by-step process by which you accomplish the mission.
What are your most profitable products and services? What are they today? What could they be tomorrow? Who are your most important and valuable customers today? Who could be your best customers tomorrow, and how could you attract and keep more of them?
What are your customers’ psychographics? What are their goals, ambitions, desires, and aspirations? What are their fears, misgivings, or suspicions that might cause them to hesitate from buying your product or service?
