In a fast-moving, reactive environment, when predictions are likely to be wrong and longterm plans are essentially useless, the goal cannot be to optimize efficiency; rather, it must be to engineer flexibility. Accordingly, planning cycles may shrink to less than a year or even become continual.
A technology driving force occurs when you build your business around your technology. One prime example of a technology-driven driving force company is Apple. Apple does not produce refrigerators or sell groceries. Apple only manufactures products where its advantages and innovations in technology can give it market advantages over competitors.
Budget For The Big Items
Worrying too much from the start about what is acceptable and achievable may lead to compromises being made too easily. Always have a clear view of the ideal decision, and then test it. If compromise is necessary, make sure it is made positively, with a clear focus on what needs to be achieved.When thinking about the future of your business, start with your external environment. What are the trends in society, government, politics, technology, and the economy that are relevant to you? Next look at the trends affecting your key players—your customers and suppliers. Look at your value chain. How will it differ in the future? What key success factors are going to be required? How will your industry change?
Strategy is scarcity’s child and to have a strategy, rather than vague aspirations, is to choose one path and eschew others. There is difficult psychological, political, and organizational work in saying “no” to whole worlds of hopes, dreams, and aspirations.
Don’t keep your budgets and financial projections in a drawer. Use them to chart the implementation of your strategies. There’s no guarantee that careful budgeting and financial analysis will bring the success you want, but without them, failure becomes more likely.

Similarly, your pricing has to be in line with what the market will bear so that it will provide you with a profit. How well does your model work? Really?

If you are a midlevel manager, your boss sets your goals. Or, if you work in an enlightened company, you and your boss negotiate over your goals. In either setting, it is natural to think of strategies as actions designed to accomplish specific goals. However, taking this way of thinking into a top-level position is a mistake.Factor risks into your plan and allow your organization to accept failures. Use unique insights gained from successes and failures to learn from your past experience and improve your future.
Take a broad view in selecting options. Considering the wider impact of a decision will help ensure that the right choice is made and implemented. Avoid tunnel vision and consider the effects of the decision on others. Understand the factors that influence how the decision will work in practice, and acknowledge expectations and the environment in which the decision is being made.
It’s hard to overstress the importance of communication. Know whom you’re talking to and make sure that they understand and appreciate the knowledge that they are receiving. Sometimes, technical issues are not fully explained. Other times, it can be a cultural problem.
The Budget Sets Priorities
One of the most important characteristics of a superior workforce is that all employees remain employable. This means that you employ only those people whom your competitors would want to hire if they could. It should be a goal of your human resource planning to seek state-of-theart employees. Employees should know that you expect excellence from them and that they probably will need to invest in themselves through outside training to keep their end of this bargain.A strategy is solid when all the assumptions you make at the time of its creation have been validated and tested for accuracy, and the decisions you've made can be presented with clear facts and evidence. It is important to ensure that your strategy aligns with your company’s objectives, the type of business that your organization does and is known to do and the environment in which you plan to thrive.
A natural advantage of many good strategies comes from insight into new sources of strength and weakness. Looking at things from a different or fresh perspective can reveal new realms of advantage and opportunity as well as weakness and threat.
Managing risk can too often inspire a defensive mindset that misses one of the most valuable outcomes of resilience thinking: innovation that creates new business opportunities while simultaneously benefiting stakeholders and the environment.
Take The Offensive
When everyone is looking to you for answers, you may feel you need to provide them all yourself. But your employees must own this change, too, and they need to feel competent in the new regime. If ever there was a time to delegate, it’s now. Encourage discussion, collaboration, and creative thinking among team members around specific problems or challenges that arise.Because a global strategy requires a strong global presence to start with, it’s often the end-game for international businesses, moving through the other models before achieving a truly global brand. As a company, you’re taking a gamble that your product has so much universal appeal that it will create demand regardless of market tastes and preferences — which is also why so few companies truly achieve this status:
Treat the stable nature of your capabilities as a strength, not a weakness. The goal of being adaptive and resilient is admirable, and when you’re in industries under disruption, you have to move quickly. But you can’t move effectively unless you’re willing to plot your expansion path in line with, not in opposition to, your existing strengths.
Strategic planning is not a passive activity. Strategic planning is the process of thinking through the action steps that you are going to take to achieve your goals and objectives.

Most companies have no strategic plan at all. What they have is a budget. They have sales projections. They have operational plans. A defensive business strategy, meanwhile, protects an organisation from its competitors. It aims to inspire customer loyalty and safeguard its market share, and will use tactics such as incentives, exclusive products – or exclusive arrangements with suppliers or partners – as well as above-average customer service, to entice and retain customers and maintain its competitive position.
The Benefits Of Smart Strategy
If you’re asking your team members to do something new, they may worry about risking failure or about changing their status from master to apprentice. Perhaps you’re asking them to throw out comfortable assumptions—that they provide a certain kind of value to the company, that the work they do is stable and prosperous. Maybe change upends the established balance of power, bringing some skill sets and experiences to new prominence and devaluing others.Strategic uncertainty can cause managers to communicate with team members less frequently and less openly. Ambiguous situations require you to communicate even more than normal. To demonstrate emotional steadiness, share your own emotions and acknowledge those of your team in productive ways.
In the same way that species like beavers and earthworms (known as ecosystem engineers) transform their environment to better meet their needs, successful companies stake out a dominant role in the markets where they are clear leaders—adding superior value in a way that attracts suppliers, distributors, complementary producers and other companies to join or emulate them.
Change management is an important skill in today’s business world, where strategy-formulation initiatives, reorganizations, and audacious goals are increasingly the norm. If you lead your team through change successfully — at any level—you’ll increase the group’s productivity and deliver new benefits to your organization.
Control Expenses
If we are adventurous yet disciplined, the result may be extraordinary and possibly unique in creating value and competitive advantage. People and organisations now recognise that paradoxes can be reconciled, and they are more enabled to reconcile them than ever before,partly because of technological progress.Some business planners like to be prescriptive and can spend significant resources mapping out in great detail what everyone should do differently. But a paint-by-numbers approach to strengthening organizational capabilities rarely works.
Innovations such as production innovations can be achieved at the subsystem level without impacting the company’s overall strategy. An innovation in the production process, for example, may lower a company’s cost structure to reinforce its existing cost leadership strategy without changing the utility proposition of its offering.
Ad hoc firms are low process and high input. These firms do not have a codified, recurring process that they follow every time they make a strategic change. But when a change needs to be made, the leader pulls their team together to take action. The exact steps the firm follows and the exact people in the room change from one decision to the next. The benefit of an ad hoc system is that rigid rules don’t constrain the firm.
Creating Your Vision
Economic profits are the difference between the total revenue and the total opportunity cost of producing the firm’s goods or services. The opportunity cost of using a resource includes both the explicit (or accounting) cost of the resource and the implicit cost of giving up the best alternative use of the resource. The opportunity cost of producing a good or service generally is higher than accounting costs because it includes both the dollar value of costs (explicit, or accounting, costs) and any implicit costs.One of the most significant barriers to growth is poor targeting. Absent of very specific targets, companies suffer from unclear messaging and thus misalignment between sales and marketing. Defining niches and specialties allows companies to focus resources (of course, some companies are generalists by design).
Agile firms — especially startups — are always turning on a dime, and they certainly don’t seem to be following any kind of plan. Easy enough, then, to assume that what you see an agile firm doing — acting at high speed, maintaining a high tempo, being highly responsive — is all there is.
Execution can be built into strategy formulation. This recognizes and pays respect to the importance of aligning people’s minds and hearts with a new strategy so that at the level of the individual, people embrace it of their own accord and willingly go beyond compulsory execution to voluntary cooperation in carrying it out.
