The office equipment industry focuses heavily on purchasers: corporate purchasing departments.When you get a market advantage with a superior product, service, or marketing technique, you exploit it to the fullest. You know that your competitors can copy you faster today than ever before or will do something to undermine your advantage. You cannot hesitate. You must press forward and take as much of the market as you can, while you can.
Lower the cost of your goods/services while remaining innovative. Offer unique features and high-quality customer service. For example, Walmart always tries to sell its products at a much lower price, increasing its sales through a large customer base and generating higher profits.
A hallmark of true expertise and insight is making a complex subject understandable. A hallmark of mediocrity and poor strategy is unnecessary complexity — a flurry of fluff masking an absence of substance.
From Company And Industry To Strategic Move
Strategy execution is distinct from strategy, harder to pull off than defining a strategy, and therefore more critical to success—underpinned by seemingly indisputable virtues such as diligence, discipline, consistency, alignment, and focus. But such a simplistic view of execution can be misleading and can reduce actual impact.Your business strategy must take place in the context of the company’s values and beliefs. Beliefs guide your organization’s day-to-day behavior and practices and build your organization’s culture.
Many directors and managers find their time completely occupied by ‘fire-fighting’, dealing with the crises and problems that are occurring today, rather than considering what is necessary to ensure the survival and eventual success of the business. Their skill and effort is absorbed in evaluating and taking tactical operational decisions whilst the business as a whole may be failing.
It’s far more difficult for large organizations to tolerate risk than it is for smaller ones. They simply have much more to lose. Big businesses are more inclined to accept lower-risk concepts than new ideas that involve greater risk. Smaller organizations looking to edge out much larger counterparts must have a greater propensity for failure.
Key Components Of Business Strategy
A business strategy may be well conceived and executed, and it may even succeed in achieving its aims, but it may still be vulnerable to a competitor’s actions. To be robust, decisions need to take account of potential competitive threats, and so it is useful to consider worst-case scenarios to make decisions.In business strategy work, you must develop the ability to question your own judgment. If your reasoning cannot withstand a vigorous attack, your strategy cannot be expected to stand in the face of real competition. You must also cultivate the habit of making and recording judgments so that you can improve.
Once you have developed an excellent product or service and clearly identified the very best customers who can and will buy your product/service at prices that are profitable for you, you then concentrate single-mindedly on dominating that market segment.
As you think about your own company’s identity, keep thinking about what you do and who you are. You may be tempted to define your identity in terms of what you sell—your sector, category, or industry: “We are a leader in Asia,” or “We are at the top of the energy industry.” But your people already know that you do something more specific than that.
Know When To Stop
Good strategy requires leaders who are willing and able to say no to a wide variety of actions and interests. Strategy is at least as much about what an organization does not do as it is about what it does.The competitiveness of the market affects pricing decisions. Where few direct competitors exist there may be a greater degree of latitude for pricing decisions. The nature of the competition also has an influence, as some competitors may be vulnerable to lower prices, chiefly if their costs prevent them lowering prices any further. Other competitors may be open to claims of poor value or quality. In this case, a higher price accompanied by appropriate advertising could reinforce perceptions of premium value and quality. An important rule is to target one competitor or a group of competitors, attacking them with the most appropriate pricing strategy.
Managing high growth means you have done many important things well—product development, marketing, and sales—that’s the good news. The bad news is that, at least for the short run, it feels as though the company is running you. Sometimes the best you can do is to enjoy the ride. Understand that it’s probably temporary and leverage the opportunities as best you can.
The best strategy is to focus on what you do well, and to concentrate on just a few core businesses based on core capabilities. To grow your company, you will need to expand beyond the core business. Many companies fall into the trap of expanding into businesses that are too far away from their core activities. They don’t have the experience, the capabilities, or the brand name to succeed.
Consider The Possibilities
We always hope that a brilliant insight or very clever design will allow us to accomplish several apparently conflicting objectives with a single stroke, and occasionally we are vouchsafed this kind of deliverance. Nevertheless, strategy is primarily about deciding what is truly important and focusing resources and action on that objective. It is a hard discipline because focusing on one thing slights another.Risk and resilience are often considered together, and there is no doubt that one crucial element of resilient business strategies is to minimize and manage risk. Indeed, a resilient business draws on—and strengthens—principles of enterprise risk management. However, resilient business strategies should also go beyond traditional models of enterprise risk.
A well defined business strategy will offer a guide on how your business is performing internally. Also, how you are performing against your competition and what you need to stay relevant into the future.
Challenging an industry’s conventional wisdom about which buyer group to target can lead to the discovery of a new business opportunity. By looking across buyer groups, companies can gain new insights into how to redesign their value curves to focus on a previously overlooked set of buyers.
Values Create A Strong Foundation
Business strategy can be understood as the course of action or set of decisions which assist the entrepreneurs in achieving specific business objectives. It is nothing but a master plan that the management of a company implements to secure a competitive position in the market, carry on its operations, please customers and achieve the desired ends of the business.Strategy focused on context may involve transferring a solution from one setting to another more or less as is. It may mean uncovering entirely new thinking about problems (or opportunities) by finding pioneers who are ahead of the game. At bottom, it’s about not being trapped in a single narrative.
Once you have correctly analyzed your environment, not only for the business as a whole but for each of your functions, divisions, and geographic markets, and you have identified which strategic styles should be used, corrected for your own biases, and taken steps to prime your company’s culture so that the appropriate styles can successfully be applied, you will need to monitor your environment and be prepared to adjust as conditions change over time.
Put boundaries in place. If executives on your team are endlessly asking for more information, ask questions like, “How much do we need to know before we can make a good decision here?” or “What would it take for you to have 80% confidence in this path?” or “What is our window for making this decision?” By calling attention to the indecisiveness and helping your teammates get more comfortable with acting in the absence of complete information, you are more likely to get traction to move beyond the status quo.

Strategy as learning requires senior executives to engage in an ongoing dialogue with operations across all levels and departments. The people who create and deliver products and services for customers are privy to the most important strategic data the company has available. And the strategic learning process involves actively seeking deviations that challenge assumptions underpinning current strategy.Integration is not always a good idea. When a company can buy perfectly good products and services from outside suppliers, it is usually wasteful to go through the expense and trouble of mastering a new set of business operations. However, when the core of a business strategy requires the mutual adjustment of multiple elements, and especially when there is important learning to be captured about interactions across business elements, then it may be vital to own and control these elements of the business mix.
Strategy is formulated at the top, but it must be adopted by everyone throughout the organization. It’s best that top management communicate directly with all levels of the organization. But when it comes to implementing the strategy, centralizing decisions related to that strategy should be done very carefully.
Maturity is a quality that enables you to be willing to risk profits to do the right thing, to have more tolerance for the differences of others, and to be willing to wait until the time is right rather than require immediate gratification.
Identify The Capabilities You Need To Ensure Success
If you fail to identify and analyze the obstacles, you don’t have a strategy. Instead, you have either a stretch goal, a budget, or a list of things you wish would happen.Strategic planning should have a creative component instead of being strictly analysis-driven, and it should be more motivational, invoking willing commitment, than bargaining-driven, producing negotiated commitment.
It is nearly impossible to translate—let alone execute—a strategy that you don’t understand. Yet, almost half of top executives cannot connect the dots between their company’s strategic priorities, and two out of three middle managers say they simply do not understand their strategic direction. This research points to the fact that most leaders just don’t get what their organizations are trying to do.
Your values are the foundation principles of your business. They tell you what you stand for and what you will not stand for. They give you guidance and direction in decision making and in everything you do in your business.
Be Different From Your Competitors
Successfully leading your company’s strategy depends on your having the same laserlike focus on goals. You cannot implement your strategy if you do not have absolute clarity on the strategic goals of the company.Setting a strategy gives you an active role in planning for your company’s future. Without it, too many of your actions will be focused on the short term—reacting to every potential threat, meeting goals that may not have long-term impact, and focusing too much on the day-today operations and problem solving. What’s more, without an eye on the big picture, you may miss the larger shifts in your industry—shifts that require early planning in order to respond and thrive.
It is important to distinguish between value innovation as opposed to technology innovation and market pioneering. What separates winners from losers is neither bleeding-edge technology nor “timing for market entry.” Sometimes these exist; more often, however, they do not.
Cost leadership business strategies focus on beating competitors’ prices. For example, businesses such as Amazon look for ways to increase efficiencies or reduce production costs so that their prices are lower than their competitors’ prices. They often rely on economies of scale.
