For example, a product may be positioned as inexpensive, innovative, old fashioned, prestigious, high quality or any of a multitude of other attributes. Positioning influences attitudes to and perceptions of a product or company brand, rather than changing the product itself. The value of positioning decisions is that they increase awareness of a company’s or product’s capabilities.
That an execution plan be “practical”—simple, concrete, familiar, and unchanging—seems incontrovertible. Execution is praxis, after all. But when dealing with new or changing situations, familiar, plausible actions can easily fail to achieve the desired effect.
Meeting Challenges And Threats
Small businesses need to understand their revenue and profit models so that they’ll know if their model is sustainable or will fizzle out well before it takes off. Similarly, your pricing has to be in line with what the market will bear so that it will provide you with a profit. How well does your model work? Really?
Strategic planning should have a creative component instead of being strictly analysis-driven, and it should be more motivational, invoking willing commitment, than bargaining-driven, producing negotiated commitment.
There is no such thing as a riskless strategy. Strategy will always involve both opportunity and risk, be it a competition-based or a blue ocean initiative. But at present the playing field is dramatically unbalanced in favor of tools and analytical frameworks to succeed in competition-baseds.
What is your ideal vision of your customer toward you? How do you want your customers to think about your company? Looking at your company from the outside, from the perspective of customers working with you, being involved with your people, using your products and services, and then turning around and talking about you to other people, how would you like them to describe your company? This is an excellent starting point for determining what your values and vision should be.
Distinctive Capabilities
No company wants to venture beyond competition-based markets only to find itself in a puddle. The question is, How do you maximize the size of the new opportunity you are creating? By aggregating the greatest demand for a new offering, this approach attenuates the scale risk associated with creating a new market.
When management teams begin to think about their key stakeholders, they often launch right into what they need to do for customers, for employees, and so on, without thinking first about what they want from them. Why is sorting out the “from” so important? What an organization wants from each group of key stakeholders translates neatly into its objectives.
Process management includes both processes that create value for customers, giving you a true competitive advantage, as well as those support processes that make sure you are running as efficiently and effectively as possible. The selection criteria looks at how companies did in these categories measured by an assumption that this is what it takes to be a quality-driven company: visionary leadership, customer-driven excellence, organizational and personal learning, valuing employees and partners, agility, focus on the future, managing for innovation, management by fact, social responsibility, focus on results and creating value, and a systems perspective.

In almost every case, it is ideal to retain customers than to constantly chase new ones. And this is one major area where business strategy is extremely necessary. In the absence of a sound business plan, you will find it hard to generate customer loyalty.
How well does your business strategy support the fulfillment of your company’s purpose? Purpose is what the business is trying to achieve. Strategy is how the business will achieve it. Purpose is enduring — it is the north star toward which the company should point. Strategy involves choices about what products and services to offer, which markets to serve, and how the company should best set itself apart from rivals for competitive advantage.
Business relies on hard management factors such as finance,technology and processes, yet also on soft factors such as leadership,communication and creativity. Every where we look, paradox seems to be the companion of economic progress.
A long planning document may feel rigorous, but the longer it is, the more it will distract you from the harder strategic work of finding ways to acquire and retain customers. Listing a bunch of things that the company plans to do is not the same as creating a strategy.
Setting The Right Standards
A leader’s most important responsibility is identifying the biggest challenges to forward progress and devising a coherent approach to overcoming them. In contexts ranging from corporate direction to national security, strategy matters. Yet we have become so accustomed to strategy as exhortation that we hardly blink an eye when a leader spouts slogans and announces high-sounding goals, calling the mixture a “strategy.”
Treat the stable nature of your capabilities as a strength, not a weakness. The goal of being adaptive and resilient is admirable, and when you’re in industries under disruption, you have to move quickly. But you can’t move effectively unless you’re willing to plot your expansion path in line with, not in opposition to, your existing strengths.
The SWOT Analysis works well because it contrasts the internal and external factors that affect a company. It matches the strengths found in the company’s internal environment with opportunities in the organization’s external environment in a way that makes its core competencies self-evident. Scanning the internal environment includes an analysis of the company’s structure, its culture, and its resources.
All too often, individual leaders seek—indeed are incentivized—to protect and optimize their own domains and find themselves locked in energy-sapping internal turf wars, rather than working with peers to align and improve across the entire enterprise.
Securing An Advantageous Position
There are two certainties in decision-making: the people who make and implement decisions are fallible; and the context in which decisions are implemented will be subject to change. So implementation must be monitored to ensure that information management and reporting procedures are built into the process.
If you know where you are going you have more chance of getting there. If you don't have a business strategy you are not clear on where your business is going and it is unlikely you will move your business to where you want it to be. Having a strategy in place increases your chance of getting there.
High-growth companies don’t feel limited to their current playing field. Instead, they think about whole ecosystems, where connected interests and relationships among multiple stakeholders create more opportunities. But these firms don’t approach ecosystems haphazardly. They let purpose be their guide.
Ensure that your strategy remains competitive. Choose a market that is either not served or underserved with little or no competition, and be the first one there. This way, you capture the market share, build your brand and position your company well in that marketplace, making it harder for any new entrants.
Identify Your Competitors
The principle of maneuver requires that you continually anticipate what might happen. You develop fallback positions. You prepare to be able to move forward, backward, and sideways in the market, if necessary. You resolve never to get locked into a single plan with no flexibility or no other choice. You continually keep your options open and develop new options.
If a company luxuriates in its existing capabilities, it will reinforce an internal, producer-focused mentality. It will be hard-pressed to become or stay customer-focused. Specify which capabilities must be built or maintained to produce the winning value proposition for the targeted set of customers. Capabilities matter only to the extent that they help your company meet customers’ needs better than rivals do where you’ve decided to play.
A good mission statement contains both a method and a measure. Just as a mission is something that can be accomplished, you must have clear measures and standards that you can use to determine how close you are to achieving your mission.
The ability to focus single-mindedly on one thing at a time was absolutely essential to success in a world of ceaseless activity and turbulence, constant and never-ending distractions, and so many demands for the attention of each person. Focus is the key.
Competition For Excellence
In the broadest sense, a company competes not only with the other firms in its own industry but also with companies in those other industries that produce alternative products or services. Alternatives are broader than substitutes. Products or services that have different forms but offer the same functionality or core utility are often substitutes for each other. On the other hand, alternatives include products or services that have different functions and forms but the same purpose.
To arrive at a business strategy that everyone in the business supports you will need to have a lot of discussion and debate within your business and amongst your senior team about where the business is now, where you want it to go and how you are going to get there. By getting to an agreed strategy as a team this will align everyone on the same track and wavelength giving you more chance of success.
A good strategy contains a diagnosis that defines or explains the nature of the challenge. A good diagnosis simplifies the often overwhelming complexity of reality by identifying certain aspects of the situation as critical. It also contains a guiding policy for dealing with the challenge. This is an overall approach chosen to cope with or overcome the obstacles identified in the diagnosis.
Business leaders know that the culture of a company — the way people collectively think and behave — can either reinforce or undermine their strategy. Since culture is difficult to manipulate or control, many executives tend to regard it as an enemy of change. Indeed, at companies stuck in the strategy-to-execution gap, executives tend to complain about cultural resistance and disharmony. This complaint is itself a symptom of incoherence.
