When you’ve done the hard work of sense-making, you’ll be able to anticipate the questions your team will ask and prepare the most effective answers you can.
In a world where CEOs are overcaffeinated, stressed and time-starved, many have been romanced by easy-to-use strategic templates that yield a quick-and-dirty business strategy. However, downloading a template tends to promote short-sighted thinking and poorly-executed strategies. The result is often something closer to a short-term operational plan than a true strategy.

Bad strategy tends to skip over pesky details such as problems. It ignores the power of choice and focus, trying instead to accommodate a multitude of conflicting demands and interests. Like a quarterback whose only advice to teammates is “Let’s win,” bad strategy covers up its failure to guide by embracing the language of broad goals, ambition, vision, and values.
When companies locate R&D functions far from head quarters, they’re acknowledging the importance of jumping into someone else’s context. This is not just a strategy for large companies that move people to Silicon Valley for tech or the Boston area for biotech. Startups, too, should put themselves in the best context for learning and growth.
Does your business plan spend more time describing what will happen in the first one to two years than it spends on years five to 10? Then what you have is really just a budget expressed in prose, not a strategy. Pick five years as the focus of your strategy. Where does the company want to play — and how does it want to win — five years from now? After you’ve determined that, make the next four years the steps you need to take to achieve your five-year target.
Be clear about what will make a difference so that you can make rapid resource allocation decisions. Be on the lookout for the emergence of unexpected events at the customer interface that point to opportunities that can be deliberately exploited.

I use an internal mental dialogue with them to both critique my own ideas and stimulate new ones. I try to do this before putting my ideas before others.
You have the information to put forward some assumptions about what your internal and external environments will look like in the future—and what you need to do to succeed. You’ll be able to identify potential problems on the road, but also potential opportunities.
